Hoje sai oficialmente “Binary”, single dos ingleses do Stalagmites. O trio assinou com a Veta Records de Londres e foi adotado por Steve Lamacq da BBC 6 Music e pelo John Kennedy da Radio X. Com um quê de Interpol e The Stone Roses, o Stalagmites busca influência no indie rock dos anos 90.

Conversei um pouco com o vocalista, Brad, para apresentar melhor a banda!
Quem é o Stalagmites?
Bradley Lynch (vocais/baixo), Alex Hardman (guitarra) e Nick Toft (bateria).
Como vocês se conheceram e começaram a tocar juntos?
Eu e Alex éramos da mesma classe no colegial e tiramos Nick do gumtree (site de classificados da Inglaterra). Por sorte, ele é um baterista muito bom e de Salford também, então tem a mesma mentalidade.
Pode nos contar sobre o single novo, “Binary”?
Musicalmente, foi uma música que saiu muito rápido e provavelmente é isso que dá o sentimento de imediatismo que ela tem. Daquelas que fica na cabeça e mais animada. Liricamente, também traz essa positividade. “Binary” significa algo sendo um 1 ou um 0, positivo ou negativo. Esse algo se refere à felicidade. É sobre sair de um lugar ruim e encontrar um caminho.
Você acha que o que anda acontecendo na Inglaterra agora influencia sua música de alguma forma?
Acho que o ambiente em que você está te afeta mais do que você acha. Do lado de fora da janela da nossa sala de ensaio, dá para ver vários guindastes e parte do skyline da cidade, então temos essa sensação de progresso apesar de qualquer merda que aconteça, e isso nos representa. Apesar dos integrantes de bandas desistindo e do clima da indústria da música, nós persistimos, e nossas músicas são feitas a partir disso. Então com certeza somos influenciados por tudo o que está acontecendo na Inglaterra – politicamente, musicalmente e demais. Talvez não transpareça em nossas músicas de forma óbvia, mas está em nosso subconsciente.

Quem são suas maiores influências?
Todos nós temos gostos diferentes, então é um caldeirão de misturas e temos muitos artistas como influências, mas, para citar alguns: Interpol, My Bloody Valentine, Stone Roses, Bjork, Hiatus Kaiyote, Kendrick Lamar.
Vocês estão trabalhando num novo álbum ou EP? O que podemos esperar dos próximos meses?
“Binary” sai pela Veta Records dia 9 de junho e aí vamos gravar um novo single durante o verão para ele sair por volta de setembro, além de um show que teremos mais ou menos nessa época.
Alguma história estranha ou engraçada desde que começaram a tocar ao vivo?
Fizemos um show em Chester que foi uma zona. O cara do som largou tudo assim que a gente chegou porque ele estava se bicando com o empresário, então tivemos que ajeitar o som sozinhos, o que a gente não conseguia fazer. A correia da guitarra quebrou enquanto eu cantava e minha guitarra caiu no chão, então tive que pegar emprestada a correia do vocalista da banda de abertura. Eu tinha emprestado os pedais de voz pra esse mesmo cara e ele deve ter apertado o negócio errado quando terminou o show, então quando nós entramos na sequência, minha voz parecia do Alvin e os Esquilos. Depois do show eu andava por lá pensando que tinha algo fedendo e nunca melhorava. Eu olhei pro meu ombro e tinha uma mancha de sujeira onde a correia emprestada apoiada porque o cara tava suando demais. Tinha cheiro de academia.
Falando nisso, o que a gente pode esperar de um ao vivo de vocês?
Um som cru, honestidade e paixão ao tocarmos nossas músicas.
Cite uma música que te lembre o Brasil e explique o por quê.
Travessia do Milton Nascimento. Ela me lembra o Brasil porque Milton é o único artista brasileiro que eu conheço até agora, mas vou explorar mais as músicas de vocês. Essa é uma das músicas mais bonitas que já foram escritas e o álbum em que ela tá também é incrível.

Stalagmite’s single “Binary” is officially out today! The trio has signed to London’s Veta Records and has received support from BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq and Radio X’s John Kennedy. Their sound reminds me of Interpol and The Stone Roses, bringing back elements of ‘90s indie rock.

Who are Stalagmites?

How did you all meet and start making music together?
Me and Alex were in the same form at High School and we plucked Nick from gumtree. Luckily he’s a top drummer and from Salford so he has the same mentality.
Can you tell us about your new single “Binary”?
Musically it came together pretty quick and that probably gave it the immediacy that it has. Catchy and upbeat. Lyrically, its the same in that its positive and looking forward. Binary meaning something being a 1 or a 0, either on or off. That thing being happiness. So it’s about coming from a dark place and finding a way out.
Do you think that everything that’s happening in the UK right now influences your music somehow?
I think the environment you’re in affects you a lot more than you think. Out of the window of our rehearsal room you can see loads of cranes and part of the city skyline so there’s that feeling of progress regardless of any shit that’s going on, and that feels like us. Regardless of band members leaving and the climate of the music industry we’ve kept going, and our songs have been shaped by that. So we are definitely influenced by everything going on in the UK – politically, musically and otherwise. It might not all find its way into our songs in obvious ways but it gets into our subconscious.
Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?
We’ve all got different tastes so it’s a nice melting pot and there’s so many artists we’re into but to name a few: Interpol, My Bloody Valentine, Stone Roses, Bjork, Hiatus Kaiyote, Kendrick Lamar.
Are you working on a new EP or album? What can we expect from the next months?
Binary is out on Veta Records 9th June and then we’ll be recording a new single over summer ready for a release around September, plus a gig around the same time.
Any fun or weird story since you’ve started playing live?
We did a gig in Chester which was a mess. The sound guy stormed out when we walked in because he was kicking off with the manager so we had to do the sound ourselves which we couldn’t. My guitar strap broke while I was singing and my guitar dropped to the floor so I had to borrow the support band singer’s strap. I’d lent my vocal pedal to that same lad who must have pressed the wrong thing on it when he finished so when we came on after I sounded like a bunch of chipmunks. After the gig I was walking round thinking something stinks here and it won’t go anyway. I look down on my shoulder and there’s a dirty stain where the borrowed guitar strap had been resting because he’d been sweating hat much. Smelt like a gym.
Speaking of which, what can we expect from your live shows?
Raw, honest, passionate delivery our songs.
Name one song that reminds you of Brazil and explain us why!
Travessia by Milton Nascimento. It reminds me of Brazil because Milton is the only Brazilian artist I know so far but I’m going to explore Brazilian music more. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and the album which it is from is class too.
